Welcome to the Home of W6ECK serving the El Cerrito and Kensington Communities

KARO ECHO is the acronym for the Kensington Amateur Radio Operators (KARO) and the El Cerrito Ham Operators (ECHO) mutual benefit association, an all-volunteer non-profit tax deductible organization (501c3) of amateur radio operators providing auxiliary communications and related training for the cities of Kensington, El Cerrito, and adjacent areas in the event of a disaster. KARO ECHO works with CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams), but is not an official part of the CERT program. As a 501c3 corporation KARO-ECHO is open to provide radio communications to other local non-profits who operate in the public interest.

Although our focus is on Kensington and El Cerrito and surrounding areas, all are welcome to train with us. KARO ECHO provides hands-on practical training, education, and biannual Simulated Emergency Tests (SETs) emphasizing best practices.

Mission Statement

To provide skilled radio operators who can deliver reliable and effective radio communications for the El Cerrito and Kensington communities.

Field Day 2022 - Learn About Amateur Radio & Emergency Communication - Free

The public is invited to learn more about amateur radio at a free outdoor event sponsored by the Kensington Amateur Radio Operators and the El Cerrito Ham Operators (KARO-ECHO) and the East Bay Amateur Radio Club (EBARC). The event will be on Saturday, June 25, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Upper Canyon Trail Park, 6757 Gatto Ave, El Cerrito, CA

Directions: Go up the Hill on Cutting Blvd. Turn Left onto Hagen. Continue 1/2 block to the Y in the road. Go straight forward onto Canyon Trail which turns into Gatto. Follow the coax.

The event will feature hands-on demonstrations of amateur radio equipment where visitors will be able to make voice contact with operators in other parts of the country or watch experienced “ham” radio operators sending digital emails through the radio and making long-distance contacts using Morse Code. Over 40,000 amateur radio operators across North America will be online for this annual celebration of amateur radio known as ARRL Field Day.

Amateur radio is a great hobby for the whole family and amateur radio operators also play an important role in natural disasters and other emergency situations. Even when the cell phone towers and Internet are down, amateur radio operators are able to communicate over long distances using battery-powered transmitters like the ones that will be demonstrated on Field Day.
